Why I’m Running

“I am running for the school board to empower our teachers to focus on closing the achievement gap between Loudoun County Public Schools and international systems, free from excessive regulations and policy burdens. My vision is to transform Loudoun County Public Schools into a STEM powerhouse where no talent is overlooked, rich or poor.

My Top Priorities

Mental Health

Prioritize student mental health issues like anxiety, loneliness, depression, stress, and bullying early and proactively.

Expand JROTC

Foster leadership, responsibility, teamwork, discipline, physical fitness, and confidence, while promoting patriotism and character building.

Higher Education Standards

We need to prepare students for global competitiveness. We must focus on challenging young minds with skills and knowledge.

About

Dr. Yan has lived in Loudoun County for 25 years. Three of his children graduated from Loudoun County Public Schools, and one is a cadet at the Air Force Academy. Trained as a scientist, he was a mathematics professor at Tsinghua University and contributed to research at the National Laboratory. Additionally, he has prior experience working in the semiconductor industry.

Having closely observed and studied American education in comparison to systems abroad, Dr. Yan is deeply concerned about the persistent achievement gap in both K-12 education and higher education.

Despite the nation’s abundant resources, he feels the potential for excellence is squandered, generation after generation, due to a lack of political will and commitment from leaders across the spectrum.

For many years, Dr. Yan has been a passionate advocate for a merit-based education system. He firmly believes that the purpose of education is to prepare students for life, equipping them to serve others and contribute to the nation. In his view, a country can achieve greatness only when its education system produces students who are internationally competitive.
